I think that the more painting relies on Art theory the less interesting it is. For example Chagall and Malevich (famous for the black square painting) were in the Russian Avent garde. Chagell however rejected Art theory while Malevich embraced it.

This was a fundamental dichotomy in Modernism between reductionist analytical classicism (Malevich) and a more romantic approach  (Chagall)

I think of it as left brain analytical Malevich.

right brain intuitive Chagall/

Should Art be serious? Are Artists tortured souls whose work is a epic struggle.

For some Artists the answer would clearly be yes. Look at Goya, Van Gogh, Munch, Bacon etc.

Then there are other Artists Jeff Koons for example who in any interview with him gives the same scripted reply in his soothing monotone voice.. “I never have a problem with my Art, I never feel any difficulty whatsoever”

So which Art is more valid?

I think both. Why is suffering more important than pleasure. Both reflect different aspects of the human condition.

Here is a portion of a ¨manifesto¨ composed by Joyce Kozloff, a leader in the Pattern and Decoration movement in in the 1970s and ’80s. It is called “On Affirmation” (1976)

I find most of the qualities describe my own work.
